What kind of steel (chemical formula) Performance Center of S&W use to produce big bore revolvers (500 & 460)?
Not many gun manufactures companies make known data about materials (steel and other) using to produce their gun: I know, for exemple, that the monstrous Pfeiffer Zeliska .600 NE revolver is made with quenched and temperad 42CrMo4 steel, while that Marco Rigido’s “tank”-revolver named Cucciolo (.720 caliber!) is made with 39NiCrMo3 steel for barrel and cylinder and 18NiCrMo5 steel for the rest.
Of course nobody of us (I believe) will ever buy one of those monsters!
Instead a lot of us own a S&W revolver: Smith & Wesson does not make known specific informations about materials used to make its handguns, and especially big bore revolvers are which interest me.
Another question: Performance Center use a different steel than S&W standard production?
Can you help me?
Thanks
Gun manufacturer are very tight lipped about giving out technical info. This includes production numbers, serial number ranges, and manufacturing processes. I once asked Ruger for a list of serial number ranges for a gun , and I was refused the info.

How do I recover data from a crashed Mac with a damaged hard drive?
Hello, I have had the unfortunate experience of having my relatively new MacBook laptop crash. I heard terrible noises right before the horror of it all…a grayish blank screen containing one small file folder in the center and a flashing question mark. I have already spent 8 hours reading every computer blog including Mac’s own tech support website. I don’t want to pay the $1.000′s for professional data recovery and thought that someone might have an answer from personal experience with the same problem. Thank You!
It completely depends on whether the drive still works or not.
Here’s what I did to recover a friends crashed MacMini.
I got an external USB/Firewire enclosure with a laptop sized drive. Its the kind that can fit inside most modern laptops. It was like $99 for a 350gigabyte drive. I partitioned it into two sections knowing later on, I was going to copy the damaged drive back to this drive and I didn’t want it to overwrite systems files.
I got my friends copy of leopard to boot from and did a standard install onto the external drive. After the install was complete and I verified the mini could boot from the new drive, I removed it from the external case, and put it in the macmini. I took the original drive and put it in the external enclosure. Now with the new drive inside the Macmini, I tried to boot again. Sucess.
I bought a program called Disk Warrior. Its usually available at any apple store for $99. It was able to read the original drive (now in the external enclosure) even though I couldn’t even see it any other way. It re-created the directory structure and allowed me to copy files from the old damaged drive to the new hard drives’ blank partition. It rescued about 90% of the old content.
Later on I tried reformating the original drive from scratch to see if it was just a glitch or really damaged. It was damaged. So its a good thing I copied the files when I could.
